The lore behind Oregano use is extensive and can be found frequently in the Mediterranean region. There is a legend that Aristotle believed Oregano could cure snakebites due to watching tortoises eat wild Oregano after being bit. There is no scientific evidence currently supporting this legend, but it shows us how long humans have been using Oregano.



Identification

Oregano had bright green, opposite, ovate leaves. It is a sprawling, low to the ground plant. In the spring, the flowers are minute purple spikes that poke out above the foliage.

Culinary Uses

Oregano is a popular culinary herb in Mediterranean and Italian dishes. It is delicious in pizzas, pasta, soups, savory bread, and marinades.

Household Uses

Due to the potent antibacterial and antifungal properties of Oregano, it is a beautiful cleaning herb. Soaking Oregano in vinegar is a great way to make an all-purpose household cleaner and a bathroom scouring scrub.

Medicinal Uses
