These germs are not playing out there lately. Everyone I know has been sick- strep, viruses, colds, bronchitis, covid, flu, you name it and it is going around. When the swirling germs land in my house I know that there a lots of great herbal remedies we can take advantage of, maybe we need a good steam, some tea, a compress, a tincture, or some elderberry syrup. However, there comes a time when I know it is time to call in the BIG DOGS. Which big dogs? Fire Cider, of course!

Fire Cider is a traditional healing tonic and medicine that I came to learn about from the Grandmama of Modern Herbalism, Rosemary Gladstar. In fact you can read what she has to say about it here. If you are an herbal medicine lover you know her well, if you are just dipping your toes in I cannot recommend her books and teachings strongly enough!
What is Fire Cider?
Fire Cider is an easy to make and adaptable kitchen remedy that comes in handy when illness strikes or as a tonic to boost your immune system. The basics are an Apple Cider Vinegar base with chopped up vegetables and herbs. The most common include; onion, garlic, ginger, turmeric, citrus fruits, basil, oregano and any other goodies you have on hand. The basis of making it are pretty simple too; put it all in a glass jar, shake it up, store it in a cool dark place for about a month, strain and use.

Chop up all the ingredients and measure them with your heart (except the vinegar), throw them in a big old mason jar, or a pickle jar or any sort of clean glass jar with a lid. Cover all the veggies and herbs with apple cider vinegar until everything is covered. Cover the jar and store it in a cool dark place for 2-4 weeks, be sure to give it a good shake once a day or so. After the waiting period, strain your medicine and place it back in a clean jar and I like to store mine in the fridge.
To use as a tonic I like to take a shot of it daily, and if I feel myself getting ill I will increase my shots to 2-3 times a day.
Get Out There. Get Wild. Heal.
